One key Glazers' man survived the Ineos culling and he's thriving now, it sends a big message - opinion

The changes that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos have engineered at Manchester United since arriving have been nothing short of momentous.

On the pitch, off the pitch, in the boardroom, and in the architecture of the club, there is no area that has been left untouched by their impact.

Their first order of business, however, was putting in footballing experts in place in time for the summer window, a move that has already paid dividends.

From fans complaining that United don't have enough footballing expertise in the executive structure to Ineos effectively assembling a dream team in six months, it has been a whirlwind.

Many Glazer's men have been swept up in this tornado, with the likes of Richard Arnold, John Murtough, Cliff Baty, and many more no longer at United. One man hasn't, and he's thriving now...

The results are clear for all to see, with United securing two multiple signings already and working along a clear plan and vision.

MORE UNITED STORIES

However, the man who is getting all these transfers done is someone who has been at the club for a while and was a key Glazer man.

Matt Hargreaves is the Head of Negotiations at the club, tasked with talking to clubs regarding terms of any deal, incoming or outgoing.

He is the man who was also derided often under the Glazers as they made some truly baffling deals, like spending PS86 million on Antony, or traveling to Spain to secure Frenkie de Jong without knowing if he wants to join.

Hargreaves was seen as just another symbol of the "accountant" culture at the club, where footballing know-how was second, and securing Glazers' interest was the primary objective.

Fast forward to today, and the differences can already be seen. He has played a huge role in finalising favourable terms for Joshua Zirkzee, where United avoided paying the release clause up front and saved themselves wiggle room for FFP.

Leny Yoro was secured quickly and decisively by beating off competition from others, including what Real Madrid, who were reportedly the player's first choice.

The 180-degree turn in Hargreaves' reputation in just one transfer window sends a big message.

Importance of culture While it can't be extrapolated to everyone who is not at the club anymore, Hargreaves' turnaround makes it easy to see how important the culture is at any club.

The Glazers weren't directly involved in many things but the dithering and uncompetitive culture they had fostered at the club affected even high-performing individuals.

Hargreaves doing the business in this window proves the fault wasn't in his abilities, but in the structure around him that hindered success.

It hammers home Sir Jim Ratcliffe's message regarding Erik ten Hag as well, when he said if every manager keeps failing at the club, the problem can't be the manager.

Of course, it will take much longer to know definitively if that statement is correct for Ten Hag, who has much to prove, but Hargreaves is a good example to follow.

Ineos have lifted the dark cloud of malaise from over the club and so far, it looks to have empowered even those who were criticised under the Glazers. Ten Hag will hope to take Hargreaves' example.
